Today’s brief

The Red Sox rallied for three runs in the ninth to beat the Giants 3-2 at Fenway on Saturday night, Eli White sliding home headfirst on Wilyer Abreu's fielder's choice and the call surviving a Giants replay challenge; Boston is now 70-59 and third in the AL East. The rest of the day was dominated by return timelines: manager Chad Tracy said both Roman Anthony (right wrist, rehabbing at Double-A Portland since Tuesday) and Trevor Story (rehabbing at Triple-A and just 3-for-13 with four strikeouts) could rejoin the club for Monday's series in Miami, though neither has been activated and Story's struggles have raised questions about displacing Andruw Monasterio and Nick Sogard. On the roster front, Marcelo Mayer — dealt to San Francisco for reliever Erik Miller — was kept out of a possible Fenway debut by a right foot bone bruise. Sonny Gray's Friday win, his league-leading 16th, made him the only Red Sox pitcher besides Tim Wakefield in 50 years to win 16 of his first 24 starts with the team.

Story's Rehab Woes

Trevor Story's rough rehab could disrupt what the Red Sox built during his absence

Story is 3-for-13 with no walks and four strikeouts (.231/.231/.231) in his Triple-A rehab games alongside Isiah Kiner-Falefa, after hitting .206/.244/.303 before the injury. The piece argues activating him would cost Andruw Monasterio or Nick Sogard playing time and that top prospect Franklin Arias (.291/.357/.488 with four homers and 22 RBI in 22 Triple-A games) is the better call-up.

Trade Pays with Miller

Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer Stunner Looks Even Better Now

Erik Miller, acquired from San Francisco for Mayer, has not allowed a run in eight Boston appearances with a 14-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 8 1/3 innings and three more years of control. Mayer has yet to debut for the Giants and was scratched from a possible Fenway return by a right foot bone bruise.

Gray's Win Marks 16th

Sonny Gray Just Made Modern Red Sox History With Giants Win

Gray's Friday win in the series opener was his league-leading 16th, making him and Tim Wakefield (1995) the only pitchers in 50 years to win at least 16 of their first 24 starts with Boston. Gray is 16-3 with a 2.79 ERA and a 123-to-36 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 138 2/3 innings.
